What Is CPaaS?

CPaaS, or Communications Platform as a Service, lets businesses add SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, voice calls and email to their own apps and systems through APIs, without building telecom infrastructure.

Quick answer

CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service) is a cloud platform that gives businesses ready-made APIs and tools to send and receive messages and calls, such as SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, voice and email, from their own applications. The provider handles the connections to telecom operators and messaging networks; the business pays per message, minute or feature it uses.

How CPaaS Works

1. Your app or systemA website, mobile app, CRM or billing system decides when to communicate, such as after a login or an order.
2. API callIt sends a request to the CPaaS API with the recipient, channel and message or call details.
3. CPaaS platformThe platform routes it to the right network: telecom operators for SMS and calls, Meta for WhatsApp, and so on.
4. Reports backDelivery reports, replies and call events come back to your system through callbacks (webhooks) or a dashboard.

In India, the platform also has to follow local rules, such as TRAI's DLT registration for commercial SMS and Meta's template approval for WhatsApp business messages.

CPaaS Channels and What They Are Used For

RCS Messaging

Rich, branded messages with images, carousels and buttons in the phone's messaging app.

IVR

Automated call menus that route incoming callers to the right team or information.

Toll-free numbers

Developers can connect these channels through the MetaReach API.

Benefits and Things to Check

Faster to launch

Add OTPs, alerts or a WhatsApp chatbot in days using APIs, instead of setting up telecom connections yourself.

Pay for what you use

Costs follow your message and call volumes, so they scale up or down with your business.

One provider, many channels

Fall back from WhatsApp to SMS, or follow a missed call with an SMS, from one platform.

Before choosing a provider, check: published or quoted rates for each channel at your volume, DLT and WhatsApp onboarding help, API documentation and delivery reports, support hours, and data handling. For SMS specifically, see the bulk SMS provider comparison.

CPaaS FAQs

What is CPaaS in simple words?

CPaaS, or Communications Platform as a Service, is a cloud service that lets a business send and receive SMS, WhatsApp messages, calls and other communications from its own app, website or software through APIs, without building telecom infrastructure itself.

What is the difference between CPaaS and UCaaS?

CPaaS provides APIs so businesses can build communication into their own applications, mostly to talk with customers. UCaaS (Unified Communications as a Service) is a ready-made product for a company's internal communication, such as office phones, video meetings and team chat.

What are examples of CPaaS use cases?

Common examples are OTP verification by SMS, WhatsApp or voice, order and delivery alerts, appointment reminders, WhatsApp chatbots and support, IVR menus for incoming calls, missed call campaigns, and click-to-call from a website.

How is CPaaS priced in India?

CPaaS is usually priced per use: per SMS, per WhatsApp message (Meta's per-message charges plus any platform fee), per call minute or pulse, and sometimes a monthly fee for numbers or features. Providers differ in whether they publish rates or quote by volume. See MetaReach pricing.

Do I need a developer to use CPaaS?

For API integration, yes. Many providers also offer web panels and no-code tools, so a business can send campaigns, run a WhatsApp chatbot or set up an IVR without writing code, and add API integration later.

Is MetaReach a CPaaS provider?

MetaReach provides communication channels for businesses in India, including bulk SMS, OTP, WhatsApp Business API, RCS, IVR, voice and email, with APIs and web panels, plus setup help such as DLT registration.
