Make WhatsApp text bold, italic, strikethrough or monospace, add lists and quotes, and see exactly how the message will look before you copy it.
WhatsApp formats text using symbols around it. The formatter adds them for you, and these are the same symbols you can type on any phone or on WhatsApp Web.
| Style | Type this | Shows as |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | *text* | text |
| Italic | _text_ | text |
| Strikethrough | ~text~ | |
| Monospace | ```text``` | text |
| Inline code | `text` | text |
| Bulleted list | - text or * text at the start of a line | • text |
| Numbered list | 1. text at the start of a line | 1. text |
| Quote | > text at the start of a line | text |
You can combine styles, such as *_bold italic_*. Lists, quotes and inline code work on current WhatsApp versions; older app versions show the symbols as plain text.
Highlight the offer, price, date or order number. If everything is bold, nothing stands out.
Strike out the old price next to the new one, such as ~Rs 999~ *Rs 799*, so the discount is clear at a glance.
Put coupon codes, tracking IDs and reference numbers in monospace so they are easy to read and copy.
Formatting works the same way in WhatsApp Business API template messages. If you send offers and updates to many customers, see bulk WhatsApp messaging. You can also create a WhatsApp chat link with a pre-filled formatted message.
Put an asterisk on both sides of the text, like *hello*. On most phones you can also select the text, open the menu and choose Bold.
For italic, put an underscore on both sides: _hello_. For strikethrough, use a tilde on both sides: ~hello~.
The symbols must touch the text, with no space between the symbol and the first or last character. A symbol inside a word, or a space right after the opening symbol, stops the formatting. Bold, italic and strikethrough also work only within one line.
Yes. Combine the symbols, for example *_hello_* for bold italic. Keep the symbols in matching order on both sides.
Yes. Template message bodies sent through the WhatsApp Business API support the same symbols, such as *bold*, _italic_, ~strikethrough~ and ```monospace```.
